CAN WE DO AN ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT USING ALIGNERS WITHOUT THE USE OF ATTACHMENTS?
PAIN/COMFORT From DIGITAL ORTHODONTICS - Solo Edition by Dr. Bak Nguyen
Yes, it is possible but not optimal. Attachments are like handles that dentists clue to the teeth, allowing more precision and amplitude of movement. Just like brackets, they help to guide the alignment of the teeth.
Not all cases required attachments. Mild and severe cases need attachments to complete movements like extrusion and rotation, not having attachment is like driving a Ferrari going only 30 miles an hour and without power steering.
So even if some cases can be treated without attachments, most of them require attachments in order to achieve the desired movement and to do so in a reasonable timeframe.
You need to talk to your attending to know when and where the attachments will be installed. Depending on the cases and the attending, attachments may not have to be in for the whole duration of the treatment. That is something you will have to discuss with your attending.
A piece of advice, do not tie down the hands of your doctor, your common goal is to go through treatment as smoothly as possible, as fast as possible. Attachments are there to help achieve that goal. Some things cannot be bargained, especially when it comes to biology and physic. Keep that in mind.
